Hearing tests in Oxford, matched to you

As a general guide: the Initial Hearing Test (30 minutes) suits younger patients wanting a routine check; the Complete Hearing Test (60 minutes) suits patients aged 55+ with no specific concerns; and the Ultimate Hearing Test (90 minutes) is for patients aged 65+ and/or those with known hearing concerns or who are more likely to require treatment. Our hearing assessments are now offered under three clearly defined appointment types, live and bookable in Auditdata. Each level builds upon the previous one, making it easier for patients and colleagues to identify the most appropriate assessment. The same triage principles are reflected in our online booking journey.

Yes. If your needs change, or the clinician feels a longer assessment would be more appropriate on the day, we can adjust your appointment. Please contact your practice as early as possible so we can allocate the right amount of time.

We start by talking through your hearing history and lifestyle, then examine your ears with an otoscope. You will listen to a series of tones through headphones, and depending on the appointment type we may add bone conduction, speech and middle ear tests. We then explain your results on an audiogram and discuss what they mean for you.

Bring a list of any medication you take, details of relevant medical history, and — if you can — a partner, friend or family member. A familiar voice is useful during speech testing and a second pair of ears helps when discussing the results.

Hearing changes are usually gradual. Common signs include conversations sounding less clear, asking people to repeat themselves, concentrating harder to listen, struggling in background noise, and turning the TV or music up louder than others prefer.

Choose a quiet moment, speak with care, and focus on how better hearing could help them stay connected to the people and moments they enjoy. Keeping the conversation positive and understanding often helps them feel more open to taking that first step.

Not necessarily. Many patients simply need reassurance, earwax removal or advice on hearing protection. If hearing aids would help, we will explain your options honestly, demonstrate the technology and let you decide in your own time — there is never any pressure.

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If we identify anything that should be reviewed medically, we will write to your GP with your consent.

Appointments are usually available within a few days. Longer assessments such as the Ultimate Hearing Test have limited slots each week, so it is worth booking ahead where possible.
